What is a diamond? Its characteristics and meaning in jewellery
From a lump of carbon deep in the earth to the stone on a wedding ring: understanding diamonds through the 4Cs, and why they became a symbol of lasting commitment.

A diamond is a crystallised form of carbon, formed under enormous heat and pressure deep in the earth. Thanks to its tightly bonded crystal structure, diamond is the hardest mineral known.
The 4Cs
- Cut: determines how the stone catches and reflects light; a good cut makes a stone more lively even at a small weight.
- Color: the less yellow tint a white diamond has, the rarer it is.
- Clarity: the level of inclusions inside, usually only visible under a loupe.
- Carat: 1 carat equals 0.2 grams.
Meaning in jewellery
Because it is hard and almost everlasting, diamond is linked to lasting promises: engagement rings, wedding rings, anniversary gifts. A piece of diamond jewellery is often cherished and handed down through generations.
How to choose a diamond
Prioritise the cut, then balance colour and clarity against your budget. Always ask for the grading certificate that comes with the stone. If you are still unsure, ask a ThreeTrees specialist for personal advice.
